Painful inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist — common in new parents and those with repetitive hand use.
De Quervain's tenosynovitis is inflammation of the tendons that extend and abduct the thumb as they pass through a tight tunnel at the wrist. It causes pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, aggravated by grasping, pinching, or turning the wrist.
Rest, splinting, and anti-inflammatory medication are first-line. Corticosteroid injection is highly effective for many patients. When these fail, a simple outpatient surgical release of the tendon compartment provides lasting relief.
Dr. Letzelter sees patients in Fairfax VA, Friendship Heights DC, and Children's National Hospital.
